Remote thermometer – AM2302

Hardware

A surplus Raspberry Pi 3 hosts a remote thermometer and an HD camera.

The AM2302 is a digital temperature and humidity sensor. It measures the temperature and relative humidity of the surrounding air and outputs the data to the Pi. The camera is a 12MP Raspberry Pi High Quality HQ Camera with a 6mm wide-angle lens.

Also installed:

  • FFmpeg, to compile images into an MP4 video
  • Suntime, a Python library to calculate sunset time
  • sshpass, a utility to quickly copy a file to another device

Sunset Timelapse

Starting at twenty minutes before sunset, the HQ camera starts capturing images – one every five seconds, for 40 minutes. Then, FFmpeg creates a timelapse with the images, and re-encodes the result for a smaller file size. Next the file is saved to the network’s main hub, a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8gb ram and 265gb SSD storage, and made available on the home intranet.
